CAN WE PLEASE HAVE BETTER VIDEOGAMES YET?
Written for Manifesto Jam 2026, organized by haraiva.
• I was inspired to write this by Stanwixbuster’s entry to the same jam, which I very much recommend also reading: SHUT UP ABOUT HOW MUCH YOU HATE MAKING GAMES.
• I stole html code from Mike Cook’s entry, which I also recommend reading: NO-ONE IS GOING TO BUY YOUR VIDEOGAME.
• I got the phrase “The future is here and everything needs to be destroyed” from the eponymous post-post-punk album by The Armed, which, you guessed it, I recommend too.
Thank you to Eris Desquilbet for reading an early version of this and pointing out what was (most) confusing.
This jam slaps! You should read more manifestos from the submissions page. And if you feel at all inspired to write your own manifesto, please do it!! Let's make a big big pile of manifestos!
And if you're wanting to argue with me, please write your own manifesto and post the link in the comments! I'll read it!

I want my 20 seconds back
🔥Yas queen🔥
Is it post-irony? 😁 Like you call devs to not care about success or industry practices and then plug a standard CTA. That’s very funny if intentional!
I don't care for success as the industry defines it, but I do care about viability, and I still want people to play my work. Some other manifestos say you shouldn't care about (or hope for) even viability, but I don't agree, survival is important.
Well Made
PlayManifesto.I'm always happy when I have an excuse to relisten to The Armed
This was great, thank you for writing it <3
is this satire because this person is blind to the existence of silksong (who got GOTY stolen by a AA game which is hilarious it took them about 40 people actually being employees while there was probably around 200 that helped TO COMPETE WITH 3 PEOPLE 3 FUCKING PEOPLE ) and other masterpieces
It's not satire, but also the manifesto is (silently) addressed to creators rather than players, so I think you're not really the audience I had in mind when writing it. But I will say that when I say "better games", I imagine something greater than Silksong or other well known titles. This is not to say that these games aren't good, just that we could have even better, if creators (myself included) let themselves detach from industrial thinking and put in the hard work to go beyond what we know and have today.
I'd rather not define exactly what "better " looks like to me because really I just want people to be more ambitious with the intentions of their work, but my thinking goes something like Veselokov's "Gameplay Never Mattered" manifesto (https://veselekov.itch.io/gameplay-never-mattered) though I don't agree with the title, but I do want games that transcend gameplay, which I think is what Veselokov is really getting at.
